When Culture Met The Curry
When Culture Met The Curry

If the southern state of Kerala is known as ‘God’s own country’, then the entire southern region of India (Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad, Karnataka, Kerala & Tamil Nadu) could certainly be called as ‘God’s own backyard’. Divinely though in the Almighty’s backyard, there’s much more than the beautiful regions and the lovely seasons! It’s the sumptuous cuisines that not only tantalize taste buds, but churn the souls with a heavenly experience. It’s a haven for spices that brought adventurers from world over, which eventually spiced-up the history!

Bound by diverse cultures and languages (Telugu, Coorg, Kannada, urdu, Malayalam & Tamil) the southern region lies in the peninsular Deccan Plateau. It is surrounded by the Arabian Sea in the west, the Indian Ocean in the south and the Bay of Bengal in the east. It’s definitely the soul of India.

It is this soulfulness and goodness that Culture Curry intended to bring to Mumbaikars thereby exploding the myth that south Indian food is beyond the known vegetarian delicacies like idli, vada, dosa, etc. In fact, Culture Curry is the first and one of its kind restaurant in Maharashtra offering a wide variety of south Indian food, including some of the unexplored non-vegetarian cuisine from God’s own backyard!

If a way to man’s heart is through his stomach, who else than a woman could understand this better! It all started when Master Chef Deepa Awchat being a food connoisseur, one fine season encountered many unknown scrumptiousness of south Indian food, when she was exploring this region on a family visit. Drawn further, Deepa ventured into the interiors spending considerable time exploring, understanding and learning the hidden treasures of south Indian food that was never known in a city like Mumbai. Deep Awchat was well aware that Mumbai always hungered to devour more and more new cuisines.

Mrs. Awchat in consultation with her husband Dr. Suhas Awchat – an icon, who’s a Doctor (M.D., F.R.S.H. UK), a special Police Officer winner of President’s Medals and endless laurels, is presently a well-known restaurateur, decided to introduce an exclusive south Indian restaurant. But not before hosting several food festivals, consulting housewives and experts specializing in south Indian food.

Finally the waves from southern India reached the shores of Mumbai. The Awchats took a plunge and decided to satiate Mumbai’s taste buds by starting Culture Curry on 14Th January 2001.

It is said that "experience is the best way to enjoy goodness". So step-in to enjoy and experience a whole new world of south Indian food like never before at Culture Curry!
